About Participatory Budgeting Project

PBP primarily works by:
  • Building capacity for formal decision-makers, grassroots coalitions and non-profit orgs to implement participatory democratic processes by delivering trainings and workshops, co-creating materials, coaching, and other support to staff from local governments and organizations, to enable them to implement high-impact scalable processes.
  • Advocating for participatory democratic practices.  Through relationships with practitioners, organizers, researchers, and officials, PBP increases the demand and support for participatory decision-making, creates spaces and events for shared learning, and introduces participatory democracy to those who oversee and those who are impacted by scalable pots of money - community members leaders, government leaders, and other stakeholders.
  • Shaping the participatory democracy field to value local lived experience and equity.  PBP leads this work by its own example, by participating in coalitions and campaigns, and by developing and testing innovative tools that improve the design and technology of participatory democracy.
