Project Title Pat Tillman Foundation: Increasing Outreach Efficiencies
Project Topics Data Management Marketing
Skills & Expertise
Project Synopsis: Challenge/Opportunity
The Pat Tillman Foundation's value offering applies to only a small segment of the population: veterans, active duty military, and military spouses pursuing a degree (bachelor's and above). With minimal staff and marketing resources, how do we best identify and reach a diverse portion of this subsection of the population and encourage them to apply for a program that is often seen as elite and difficult to obtain.
Project Synopsis: Activities/Actions Required
  • Understanding our offering - an academic scholarship and lifetime identification as a Tillman Scholar - granting access to a community (800 and growing by 60 each year) of high performing individuals across all fields, focused on serving their communities and with a shared background of military service.
  • Understanding the potential target audience: veterans, active duty military, and military spouses who are pursuing a bachelor's degree or higher.
    • Research on the student veteran population and related demographics
    • Identifying schools with higher than average student veteran populations
  • Understanding past applicant demographics and performance
    • Each year, an average of 2,000 individuals complete an application. 60 are selected. We have data for each applicant cycle going back at least five years but have not yet leveraged that data to identify demographic trends or look for correlations between demographic factors and success in the application process.
    • Our application process involves multiple stages and for each applicant in past years we can identify the highest stage of advancement.
Project Synopsis: Expected Results
We have limited resources (particularly staff and time) for outreach activities. A success would be identifying target areas (schools, geographies, populations) and methods (campus visits, webinars, marketing, social media) to best pursue with the resources available to us. We will know this was successful if we can execute on these suggestions and see a resulting increase in both application numbers and scores assigned to applications.
