| Project Synopsis: Challenge/Opportunity | Modern data centers depend on physical infrastructure innovations to balance efficiency, safety, and compliance. SubZero Engineering, a leader in containment solutions for critical facilities, previously developed a retractable roof system for data center aisles that would close in response to fire alarms. While there was strong demand, the initial design faced material durability and performance challenges, leading to its discontinuation. With demand persisting, SubZero Engineering seeks a new solution: a reliable, code-compliant, and manufacturable retractable roof system that protects data centers in fire scenarios while maintaining airflow efficiency under normal operations. The opportunity for students is to reimagine the product, apply engineering rigor, and prototype a new generation of safety systems that directly serve mission-critical infrastructure. Students will engage in mechanical design, materials selection, electrical integration, and manufacturability planning, working toward a viable prototype that meets stringent industry standards such as ASTM E84 fire code. By the end of the project, the team’s work will support SubZero’s product line strategy and deliver real-world engineering impact.
